WITH MANY CHARITIES struggling during the Covid-19 crisis, online supplier of parrot accessories Northern Parrots has made notable donations to five bird rescue charities.

All Star Parrots Rescue and Rehoming, Birdline UK Parrot Rescue, Joan’s North Wales Parrot Rescue, Problem Parrots and Safehaven Parrot Refuge have each received a voucher worth £150 that can be exchanged for essential parrot supplies, to help them through these challenging times.

A spokesperson from Northern Parrots said: “In an ideal world, Northern Parrots would love to help out all bird welfare charities. However we have specifically chosen charities that we have previously worked with.”

The lockdown has inevitably affected how rehoming organisations can work on a day-to-day basis and rehoming has had to cease across the board, although emergency rescues are still taking place. There will also be a serious knock-on effect in terms of fundraising.

Joan Rakhra, of Joan’s North Wales Parrot Rescue in Colwyn Bay, has used the donation to bulk-buy food, toys and fresh produce for her birds in case deliveries become problematic in the future.

“Our volunteers can’t come in, but we’re keeping things going,” she told Cage & Aviary Birds. “We can do emergency rescues, but rehoming has had to stop. I’ve got a green-winged macaw waiting to go to a new home, but the owners are in isolation so we’re holding onto him until further notice.”

Stoke-on-Trent’s All Star Parrots Rescue and Rehoming has spent most of the donated voucher money on Fred, a Catalina macaw – a hybrid between a blue-and-gold and scarlet macaw – that came into the rescue with no cage, perches or toys. A few smaller items were also bought, to restock the bird box kept for when birds come in with nothing.

“The coronavirus has seriously impacted the charity and we are doing emergencies only, for the safety of the public and the team,” said the charity’s rehoming director.
