THE ZEBRA FINCH Society (ZFS) is  doing its bit to encourage young fanciers to stay in the hobby by offering free membership for 2021 to this year’s paid-up junior members.

In addition, existing and new juniors (under 16) will be entitled to 20 free 2021 rings on receipt of their details by ZFS membership secretaries Frank and Mavis Dawson (see below), who will send them an order form. (Postage and any PayPal costs will apply.)

Publicity officer Dennis Webster said: “Junior members are extremely important, representing the future of the society. We want to encourage them to stay. The concept was raised pre-virus at the January 2020 committee meeting where it was suggested that junior membership should be free in future years. However, this requires an AGM decision, and we were unable to hold one this year.

“The ZFS has 11 juniors, which includes two partnership, so we receive nine subscriptions.”

The free membership applies only to existing young members who must confirm their details, including date of birth and current home address, in writing to Frank and Mavis. Youngsters wishing to join must pay their subscription at the standard rate, currently £14 for the first year and £10 for renewal. “However, the plan is to continue the scheme so any junior joining now will pay for 2021 but get 2022 junior membership free,” said Mr Dawson.

Annual subscription rates will be decided at the AGM, currently scheduled for April 10, 2021, when a possible continuation of the junior membership scheme will also be discussed.

Another 2021 diary date is November 17: the ZFS Club Show at Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire. Mr Webster said: “Hopefully this event will not be subject to constraints and will have a bumper entry to make up for the 2020 show being cancelled.”
