FIFE FANCY EXHIBITORS across the country are gearing up for an ultra-competitive show season – and Round One of the contest starts in Stafford at the National Exhibition (NE) on October 6.

At this year’s NE, the North Staffs & South Cheshire Fife Canary Club (NSSC) will hold its open show in conjunction with the Fife section, while the Fife Fancy Federation (FFF) has moved its annual exhibition to a standalone show on December 1.

Stafford will represent the first FFF-affiliated show of the season and the NSSC is encouraging fanciers to get involved, as it hopes to maintain the impressive 1,000 entry at last year’s show.

There will be awards for best in show, best champion, best novice and best junior, as well as full colour specials in line with Fancier of the Year, second best specials and most class wins. Judges engaged are Cain & Luc Thomas, Stuart Roberts, David Garvey and Michael Smith.

Adam Kendall of the Kendall stud is part of the organising committee for the new joint show. He explained: “The NE is a great opportunity for new and potential Fife fanciers, so having a FFF-affiliated show there was something we wanted to continue.

“We hope to maintain the high entry, with plenty of top exhibits and a feel-good factor surrounding the Fife fancy.”

The Fife exhibition calendar is jam-packed this year, with shows around the country on almost every weekend in October, November and December.

Henry Cooper, chairman of NSSC, said: “The first show of the year is always a good chance for fanciers to try out their birds and gauge the rest of the show season. We get to find out who has had a good breeding season and moult.”

The NSSC’s Novice Fancier of the Year 2018 was Jimmy Roberts, while Champion Fancier of the Year was Gerald Spencer, who does not tend to show his birds at the early shows, meaning the 2019 Champion title is wide open, added Mr Cooper.
