A DARTFORD-BASED BUDGERIGAR club could be made official next month after a keen fancier tracked down potential members on social media.

On October 18, fanciers are invited to Dartford, North Kent, to attend the first discussion meeting for a potential Dartford & North Kent Budgerigar Society (official name to be confirmed).

The idea has been in the pipeline for about four months but has only come to fruition in the past few weeks. The man behind the idea, John Bird from Orpington, Kent, told Cage & Aviary Birds: “I believe there is room for another budgerigar club in the area, and with the location being within a half hour’s drive from parts of Surrey and Sussex, and bordering Kent and Essex, Dartford seemed the best spot.”

Sixty-nine-year old Mr Bird continued: “With fellow fanciers’ help, I listed known budgerigar keepers living within a reasonable distance of the proposed club and proceeded to contact them on social media. I have just fewer than 40 confirmed fanciers with an interest to join the club. Going forward, I am hopeful that we can average a minimum of 15 members at future meetings.”

The club’s aim, as Mr Bird sees it, is not to host open shows, but to be a hub for fanciers to meet once a month for organised talks, competitions, aviary visits and to support other nearby budgerigar clubs by boosting benched figures at their shows.

Mr Bird explained: “As a group, we can assist one another to support other clubs’ shows within a reasonable distance. Even to the point that we could potentially hire a vehicle and transport members’ birds to other shows that some have not been able to attend in the past.”

The inaugural meeting will confirm roles for a small committee. Mr Bird added that he took inspiration from thriving Essex club, Mid Essex BS: “It is forward thinking, so we want to apply what this club is doing for its members and surrounding clubs and start the equivalent in another area.”

Grant Findlay, society administrator for the Budgerigar Society, added: “The BS encourages the formation of any new club if there is a need in a particular area.”

THE first meeting of the proposed new Dartford club will be held on October 18, 8-10pm at the Orange Tree Pub, 6 Hawley Road, Wilmington, Nr Dartford, Kent DA1 1NR. It is planned that follow on meetings will be held every third Thursday of the month. For more information, tel: 02037 153 739.
