A FORWARD-THINKING BUDGERIGAR club that ran the first-ever electronically screened online raffle at a UK show in 2018, says this year’s event will be bigger, better and with many new fanciers taking part.

Mid Essex Budgerigar Society’s (BS) 2019 raffle boasts a range of birds to be won from top exhibitors and breeders – including many big names who haven’t been involved before, such as former BS Club Show winner Ady Lovack and renowned Swiss fancier Daniel Lutölf.

At the 2018 raffle, 5,129 tickets were sold, with the most popular bird selling almost 700.

Graham Paine, club treasurer and sponsorship secretary, said: “This year is by far our most adventurous yet, with 20 birds and 10 other stunning prizes to be won, all in individual draws, offering those entering fantastic odds for securing the prize of their desire.”

The raffle tickets, which cost £1 each, went on sale on June 1. As well as birds, there’s also seed, nest-boxes and show, stock and breeding cages up for grabs.

Mr Paine added: “What excites me about the whole concept is the opportunity for those that could only dream of owning a bird from one of these revered breeders and studs from across the UK and Europe becoming a reality, as happened last year.

“It was so gratifying to be messaged by one of our winners to say he had won a bird he would never have been able to afford and the win meant the world to him. That’s exactly what this raffle is all about.”

The prize draw will take place at the Mid Essex BS’s gold championship open show on September 8 at Blackmore Village Hall, Ingatestone.

Ricky Anderson, Mid Essex BS promotional secretary, explained how the club has worked hard to improve the online raffle system. He said: “This year, the draws will start every 30 seconds rather than every minute, so even with two additional prizes this year, the whole thing should last 15 minutes. People can watch it all unfold on the website.”
