WELL-RECEIVED PAST presidents’ rosettes will again be up for competition at the North of England Gloster Club (OVCA event) open show on November 10.

The black-and-white-tailed rosettes were introduced last year in honour of the NofEGC’s three presidents, now all deceased: John Scott, George Storey and John Martin (see News, October 17, 2018).

New for this year is a change to the John Scott president’s rosette for best old variety canary (OVC), which takes in not only the OVC section but an expanded Lizard classification that will include blue (white ground) and non-colour-fed (natural) birds.

Mr Scott served as NofEGC president from 1975 to 2012 and was an influential fancier of and for OVCs and Lizards; both frills and Lizards at the highest level.

Keith Barker, secretary of the North East Lizard CC – which has provided patronage to the Lizard section – said: “It’s very appropriate that the John Scott president’s rosette will be presented to the OVC section which covers the expanded Lizard section as the Lizard is the oldest breed of canary. I believe John would have been very proud of this gesture.”

More incentives for the 2019 show include increased any other variety canary (AOVC) classes.

“This is in response to members wishing to exhibit the other varieties they keep,” said NofEGC chairman Norman Wallace.

He continued: “The NofEGC is trying to provide a different show to that of the single variety or the traditional CBS show.”

Four new classes have each been added for Fifes and Irish canaries. Previously both were grouped as part of the wider AOVC section but now the classification has been expanded to give each a section with stand-alone classes.
