Above, Steve Pritchard, of Cavcott Glosters and competition organiser, said: ‘Nick and I were blown away by Tony Keane’s letter and that he sent an additional payment giving someone an opportunity of a ‘free’ book. The two charities mean so much to Nick, myself and our families’

FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS of a charity book offer earlier this year, the author is giving away a further three copies – that will be personalised with the winners’ names.

The January 16 issue of Cage & Aviary Birdsreported on how Gloster canary breeder Nick Barrett was selling 40 copies of his book The Gloster Fancy Canary: A Guide to Keeping, Breeding and Exhibiting at the special price of £15. Buyers were able to choose from two charities – the British Heart Foundation or Macmillan Cancer Support – to receive proceeds of the sales.

After receiving a letter from a reader Tony Keane (see Letters, February 27), both Mr Barrett, of Glenariff Pedigree Livestock, and Steve Pritchard, owner of Cavcott Glosters, who organised the initial charity offer, have decided to run a competition on Facebook.

Mr Pritchard explained: “Following on from his letter of thanks, Tony sent a second payment via PayPal for another book requesting that I passed it on to someone of my choice on his behalf, which in turn would boost the ‘charity pot’ for his chosen recipient – Macmillan Cancer Support. I decided that the best way of doing this would be to run a competition.”

After a discussion with Mr Barrett, the pair agreed that in addition to Mr Keane’s act of generosity, they would put up two further copies of the book as prizes.

Mr Pritchard added: “On top of that, each book will be personally autographed prior to being sent out to the winners by Mr Barrett.”

In addition, the special offer has been extended: you can still purchase The Gloster Fancy Canary at the price of £15, including p&p in the UK – and the charity of your choice will receive the proceeds of the sale.
