THE NORTH OF England Gloster Club (NofEGC) has created new rosettes in honour of its three presidents, now all deceased: John Scott, George Storey and John Martin.
Each president has their own special award and the black-and-white-tailed rosettes will be given out at the NofEGC open show on November 11, and at other shows subsequently.
The NofEGC has only had three presidents in its 43 years. Long-time Cage & Aviary Birds contributor John Scott was a vastly accomplished Lizard canary and old variety canary (OVC) fancier. He became the club’s inaugural president in 1975 and held the position until his passing in 2012. Club chairman Norman Wallace said: “We remember John by awarding a special rosette for best OVC, which at our show includes Lizards and rare varieties.”
Next, George Storey, who was instrumental during the mid-1980s in giving the club a new impetus and global reputation, was elected in 2013 and held the post until 2016 when he passed away that September. The NofEGC has chosen the rosette for best champion Gloster to honour Mr Storey’s name and memory.
Finally, one of the club’s founder members, John Martin, was president from 2017 until his passing in April this year after a long illness. (See obituary, May 9 issue.) His rosette will be presented to best novice Gloster.
Mr Wallace added: “All three have, in their different ways, given the NofEGC a face to the fancy that is about quality, generosity, knowledge and looking outward. We are proud to remember our friends in this small way.”
John Scott’s close friend Kevin McCallum – an old and rare canary specialist, who helped the NofEGC implement an OVC section at its show – told C&AB that he wouldn’t have achieved half as much in the bird world without Mr Scott’s guidance. He said: “John was my mentor. He was a figurehead in the North East and was such a knowledgeable canary man.”
Following the cancellation of the Carlisle National CBS show this year, the OVC section at the NofEGC will be the official OVCA Northern Club Show for 2018.
