Above: Visitors admire the canary section at the 2016 Welsh National. The show is no stranger in its search for a dedicated show secretary. Since its late former show secretary Brian Anthony ran his last show in 2015, the Welsh National hasn’t secured a permanent replacement. Christopher Bentley held the position in 2016 and Mr Hooke’s daughter, Shelley, volunteered in 2017

THE WELSH NATIONAL is on the verge of staging a come-back in 2020, and just needs the remaining committee positions of general secretary and show secretary to be filled before  April 2019, says officials.

After falling dormant in October 2017, when the January 21, 2018 show was cancelled, former members and officials got back in touch earlier this year with a view of forming a new committee at an AGM. All positions were filled at an April meeting, apart from the roles of general secretary and show secretary. This double vacancy was the reason the 2018 show did not go ahead.

Show chairman Norman Hooke, 65, of Swansea, told Cage & Aviary Birds that talk of a come-back Welsh National  has gathered much-needed interest in recent months, but that the twin vacancies must be filled before the next AGM in April 2019.

He explained: “We’re looking for local fanciers who are organised and can use a computer proficiently. The roles can even be job-shared, if necessary.”

Hopeful officials have already made a start on plans for a come-back show at the Cwrt Herbert Sports Centre in Neath on either the weekend of January 11-12/18-19, 2020. The current committee say if sufficient support is found, they will put on a “special show” to mark the occasion.

Mr Hooke added: “To potentially put on an event in 15 months’ time that takes the Welsh National back to its heyday and fill a show hall with the chatter of various exhibition birds would be wonderful.”
